Leaders of the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour are reporting that area businesses are stepping up earlier than ever as sponsors for the annual event that will be held Oct. 11-13.
“We can’t remember a year when we’ve seen more eagerness on the part of potential sponsors,” said Rosemary Drennen, sponsorship chair woman. “You know it’s a good sign when business owners initiate a contact to say, ‘We don’t want to be left out — let’s get our sponsorship contract executed.’ ”
CEO Bill Piatt said he believes the early response is a clear indicator that the economy is improving.
“We have every reason to expect this will be an excellent year for both sponsorship and tour attendance, and that translates directly to our ability to provide significant funding for the eight participating charities,” said Piatt.
Proceeds from the home tour go to eight area charities that were selected by an evaluation committee late last year. The tour is volunteer-driven. More than 1,100 people, or about 10 percent of the lake-area’s population, will be needed for this year’s event, according to Jerry Hale, head of publicity.
One of the concerns to organizers has been getting in touch with former volunteers, many of whom changed their phone numbers when they replaced landlines with cellphones.
Those who want to volunteer during the tour can sign up by visiting www.smlcharityhometour.com or by calling Ann Kosel at 721-2477. Volunteers who can help with tour preparations should email Piatt at email@example.com.
