Kolton Cooper of Franklin County High School has been awarded the 2013 Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship for $20,000, the largest golf-related scholarship in Southwest Virginia.
Kolton, a senior with a 4.07 GPA, is a member of the National Honor Society, history club and foreign language club. He plans to attend Roanoke College.
He placed first in the Western Valley District golf tournament in 2011; was third in 2012; and was second in 2010. He was on the first A-Regional team in 2012, placed fifth in the regional golf tournament in 2012 and was most valuable player of the Franklin County golf team in 2011 and 2012.
Kolton is a volunteer at The First Tee, the Franklin County Recreation Department, the Booker T. Washington National Monument and the Scott Robertson Memorial Tournament. He is a member of Redwood Ruritan Club and tutors middle school math students.
The Don Holliday Memorial Foundation was formed in 1986 to honor the memory of Don Holliday, district sales manager of Piedmont Airlines. The Don Holliday Memorial Tournament is a one-day event held at Roanoke Country Club. This year’s event on June 22 will be the 27th tournament.
