This year marks the 100th anniversary of the T-shirt.
According to CBS news, the T-shirt was first used in the U.S. Navy after the Spanish-American War. The shirts were worn under a uniform, and were called a T-shirt because of its general “T” shape.
Soon after, T-shirts became a staple of normal wardrobe and have been used creatively. Logos are printed on them, expressive messages are used, favorite bands or movie references are represented, and they’ve even been dyed.
The shirt I’m wearing for this feature is one of my favorites. I own a lot of T-shirts, but this is one of the eye-catchers.
My mother bought this shirt for me for my 21st birthday, and it has my favorite character from any fictional universe: Darth Vader.
Now, I’m a huge “Star Wars” fan, but seeing Vader on a motorcycle with the Imperial crest from “Star Wars” on his headlights just makes it even cooler. Plus it’s special to me because it’s one of the best gifts from my mother. A shirt like this reassures me that she knows her son well.
We want to see what your favorite shirts are. You can email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) a picture of yourself wearing it. Or you can tweet us a picture of yourself by mentioning
@roanoketimes using the hashtag #tshirt. You can also send us a picture or video of it on Instagram and Vine.
Include your full name and hometown and explain briefly why it’s your favorite T-shirt. The deadline for sending me your photo is Monday, July 22. Some of our favorites will be chosen for publication.
Looking forward to seeing your shirts!
