There is no doubt that texting or talking on a phone, reading a book, applying makeup, etc. all contribute to motorist accidents and fatalities. Sadly, I have seen all of these many times.
But there are other issues that are also serious.
Recently, I was heading to Vinton. When I saw a police motorcycle along the left side of the road ahead with lights flashing, I moved to the right, as per Virginia State Law.
The car behind me swerved around me into the left lane and then had to partially enter my lane to avoid the policeman as he was returning to his bike.
The law is simple and of common sense. You are required to move over a lane if at all possible to be away from the incident.
School buses are another issue. Unless there is a physical median that separates the roadways, motorists going in the opposite direction of the bus are required to stop when the stop sign is employed.
Both laws are designed to protect pedestrians, but people seem to be too much in a hurry to care.
Please follow the law and keep people safe.
