Virginia Tech’s Homecoming 2013 concert is a double-bill of best-selling, commercial hip-hop.
Headliner J. Cole, an MC from Fayetteville, N.C., has seen each of his first two records top the Billboard pop albums chart. His latest, “Born Sinner,” is No. 79 on that chart and No. 18 among R&B/Hip-Hop albums after 14 weeks.
Opening act Wale’s most recent disc, “The Gifted,” is a few spots below Cole in the hip-hop chart, at No. 23, and at No. 137 in the top 200, though it also peaked at the top of the pops. It will be Washington, D.C., native Wale’s third trip to Southwest Virginia since 2010. He opened for N*E*R*D in April 2010 and headlined at Ferrum College in March 2011.
I was going to use this space to encourage you to go to the show at Burruss Auditorium, but at the last minute I found out the show is sold out.
If you’re interested, you can still go to blogs.roanoke.com/cutnscratch on Wednesday to see my review of the concert.
