Roanoke's fire department will retain its high rating from an insurance rating group.

The ISO, which issues ratings insurers use when setting premiums, confirmed Roanoke Fire-EMS' Class 2 rating after an assessment late last year, the department said Thursday.

The ISO rates fire departments on a 1 to 10 scale, with 1 being the best.

It evaluates departments on how they receive and handle alarms, apparatus, equipment, training and water supply.

Roanoke's department is one of only seven in Virginia with a Class 2 rating. There are no Class 1 departments in Virginia.
