A car struck a guardrail head-on Saturday evening, backing up traffic on Interstate 581 in Roanoke.
Virginia State Police Trooper R. Hawse said a 2012 Chevrolet Impala was traveling south on I-581 about 6:10 p.m. when it drifted into the median and ran into the guardrail.
Hawse said the female driver was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and a passenger was not injured. The driver was operating the vehicle with a revoked license, Hawse said, and the crash may have been alcohol- or substance-related.
The wreck closed lanes on the southbound and northbound sides of I-581, slowing traffic for more than an hour and a half. No other vehicles were involved, Hawse said.
Hawse said charges against the driver are pending.
