>The suspicious item that closed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge on Thursday was an art project, according to Roanoke police.
Police spokesman Sgt. J.K. Holt said in a news release that officers responded to the bridge at 9:39 a.m. Thursday when someone reported a drink can was wrapped in duct tape and attached to a railing with a zip tie.
Officers called in the Virginia State Police Bomb Disposal Unit to investigate the object.
Holt said the investigation is ongoing, but police determined it was a homemade art project designed to function as a pinhole camera for solargraphy . It was placed on the bridge some time before Thursday morning.
The object, Holt said, was not correlated to Thursday's anniversary of King's assassination.
Detectives are consulting with the commonwealth's attorney's office, Holt said, to determine if charges will be placed for dis rupting railway service.
The bridge was closed for more than two hours.
