Crews in Botetourt County fought a brush fire north of Eagle Rock on Thursday.
Carr Boyd, the director of Botetourt County's department of emergency services, said a large area of woods off Dagger Spring Road burned in "a significant brush fire."
Boyd said about 30 or 40 firefighters worked on containing the fire.
He said the area of woods is rough with difficult terrain.
"It's going to be a fairly elongated process," Boyd said around 6 p.m., about an hour after the fire was first reported. Crews worked for several hours until past dark.
Boyd said to his knowledge, no people or structures were involved in the fire.
