One man is dead and another is in jail following a shooting in northwest Roanoke early Saturday morning.
Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots shortly after midnight. Officers found Gabriel Felix Gomez, 31, of Roanoke, shot dead outside a home in the 3800 block of Highwood Road.
She said John Mark Altizer, 54, also of Roanoke, is in jail and charged with murder in connection with the shooting. Johnson said Altizer is Gomez’s stepfather. Altizer was arrested at the scene and is being held without bond at Roanoke City Jail, according to Johnson.
Jail records indicate that Altizer lives in the 3800 block of Highwood Road. The records did not say where Gomez lived.
Johnson said Gomez’s body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office, where an autopsy will be performed.
Gomez’s death is the third homicide that Roanoke police have investigated in 2013.
