According to a search warrant filed in Roanoke Circuit Court, a Roanoke man has admitted to shooting his stepson in a weekend homicide.
Police were dispatched to northwest Roanoke shortly after midnight Saturday when multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots. Officers arriving in the area heard a woman screaming for help outside a home in the 3800 block of Highwood Road Northwest .
Officers found Gabriel Felix Gomez , 31, of Roanoke lying facedown outside the house. He had been shot, the warrant said, and died at the scene.
A news release said police arrested John Mark Altizer , 54 . According to jail records, Altizer is Gomez’s step father and lives at the home where the shooting occurred. The search warrant said Altizer has admitted to shooting Gomez.
He told officers executing the search that the gun used in the incident was inside the home. Police retrieved four firearms in their search, which also included a pickup truck and two small sedans. According to the warrant, they also seized cartridge cases, a backpack, a bullet, cash, three cell phones and two sets of car keys.
Altizer was arrested early Saturday morning and charged with second-degree murder. He is being held without bond in Roanoke City Jail.
Police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said his next court date is scheduled for May 28.
