A bicycle crash off the Blue Ridge Parkway sent a man to the hospital Tuesday afternoon, according to a release from the Bedford County Department of Fire & Rescue.
A park ranger called emergency services after a group of bicyclists reported a 50-year-old man had wrecked, causing his bike to go off the roadway and down a 10-foot embankment.
The fire and rescue department responded about 1:45 p.m., sending a crew to the 8900 block of Peaks Road.
The release said that other cyclists estimated he was traveling approximately 40 mph at the time of the crash. The park ranger who called for assistance found the man unresponsive and pinned between two rocks .
The man was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital with possible head injuries, according to the release. He was reportedly from out of state and was participating in a biking event.
