Dave's secret, "I steep the spices in dark beer before adding them," he said. This is the largest event of this kind in the state attracting competitors from all across the state. The winning team earns the opportunity to represent Virginia at the World Championship Chili Cook_Off in Las Vegas or Omaha. Proceeds from this event benefit the Greenvale School's Scholarship Tuition fund.

The spring festival season opens in full bloom this weekend, with a few changes because of the ongoing renovation of downtown Roanoke's Elmwood Park.
Community School's annual fundraiser, the Strawberry Festival, will be held Friday and Saturday and be moved uphill to the corner of Elmwood Park at South Jefferson Street and Elm Avenue, beside the library.
Meanwhile, First Fridays will open at the SunTrust Plaza on Franklin Road, and the Greenvale School's annual fundraiser, the Virginia State Championship Chili Cook-Off, happens Saturday in its usual spot at Railside Plaza. Just a short walk away, a Cinco de Mayo fest will be held Saturday in the Wells Fargo Plaza.
Three other big spring events will be moving this month because of the Elmwood renovation: Local Colors will be held May 18 at Elmwood Park's upper end; Downtown Roanoke Inc.'s BB&T Party in the Park opens May 16 in front of the main Roanoke library on Jefferson Street and continues each Thursday through Sept. 12 (not to be confused with EventZone's Party in the Park, which opens the same day but has relocated to the suburban Daleville Performance Pavilion); and Roanoke Festival in the Park will be held May 24 to 27 at River's Edge Sports Complex.
