A 92-year-old resident of a Salem assisted living center is in jail facing charges of malicious wounding, assault on a police officer and property damage.
Salem police were called to a senior facility in the 1900 block of Roanoke Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. April 25 regarding an assault, Sgt. Mike Crawley said. An officer found a resident of the facility, 54, with lacerations to his head and face.
Crawley did not name the facility, but the Salem Health and Rehabilitation Center is located at 1945 Roanoke Blvd.
When police attempted to make an arrest in the assault, the suspect struck a police officer and damaged a piece of the officer’s equipment, Crawley said. Police eventually arrested Robert H. Tolliver, who was being held without bond Wednesday in the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life threatening and was released the following day, Crawley said. The police officer was uninjured.
