Roanoke police on Friday arrested two New York residents who investigators say stole more than $200 in merchandise from at least one store at Valley View Mall.
Officers arrested Brooklyn residents Jayquan Nash, 22, and Destinee Quawnique James, 20, and charged them with grand larceny. Court records show they were arraigned Monday morning and remain in the Roanoke City Jail.
Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said officers were called to the 4800 block of Valley View Boulevard Northwest at 9:19 p.m. for a reported shoplifting. She did not identify the store where the shoplifting was believed to have occurred, saying “the investigation is ongoing to determine which store or stores these items were taken from.”
Nash ran from at least one store’s loss prevention employee and fled across Interstate 581 in the darkness and rain, Johnson said. He was found hiding in tall grass by officers who set up a perimeter around the mall.
James was found a short time later in the Red Robin parking lot driving a sedan with New York license plates.
“Through the course of the investigation officers identified both individuals as the suspects in the shoplifting, and a large quantity of items with merchandise tags and store alarm devices were located in the vehicle,” Johnson said.
She said it was not clear if either individual has ties to the area.
