Update: Police call Friday fatal crash at DUI checkpoint suspicious (May 28, 2013)
A man was killed Friday night in a wreck at a DUI checkpoint on U.S. 460.
According to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller, state police and local authorities were conducting a DUI checkpoint on U.S. 460 at the line between Campbell County and Bedford County on Friday night.
At 9:30 p.m., a 1997 Honda CR-V was traveling west on U.S. 460 when it rear-ended a Ford F-150 pickup truck that had slowed down for the checkpoint, Geller said.
The driver of the Honda, Emerson L. Evans, 25, of Barboursville, died at the scene, Geller said. The driver of the truck, Michael R. Heflin Jr., 44, of Huddleston, and his wife were taken to Lynchburg General Hospital by ambulance for injuries that were not life threatening, according to Geller.
The incident is under investigation.
