A water main break closed a portion of Roanoke Boulevard in Salem on Sunday afternoon.
The pipe burst about 4 p.m. and forced the closure of the street from Electric Road to the Salem Village Mobile Home Park, Salem police Lt. C.W. King said.
Police had to detour traffic around the area.
The pipe belongs to the Western Virginia Water Authority, not the city of Salem, King said.
King said a repair crew was expected to need several hours to repair the break. Water service remained uninterrupted Sunday afternoon, King said.
Crews were still fixing the main shortly after midnight today.
