Virginia’s unemployment rate rose slightly in May as more people entered the job market to look for work.
The rate increased to 5.3 percent in May from 5.2 percent in April, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Friday. The figures have been adjusted for seasonal changes.
The jobless rate rose as the state’s labor force expanded by about 9,279, the second consecutive month it has increased, the commission said. More people reported they were working, and more people reported they were looking for work.
