A vehicle on Interstate 581 in Roanoke struck a bear Friday night, killing the animal, police said.
About 11 p.m. on I-581 north just past the Orange Avenue exit, a vehicle collided with a small bear cub that was crossing the road, according to Roanoke police Lt. Barry Booth.
Booth said the bear was severely injured and animal control was brought to the scene to put it down.
He said there was minimal damage to the vehicle and no other injuries. At least one lane of the road was closed for a few minutes after the incident.
Earlier Friday morning a black bear had been spotted near a busy Roanoke intersection.
Department spokesman Scott Leamon said the bear, of an undetermined size, was reported before 9 a.m. near Sycamore Avenue and Courtland Road, about a block from where Williamson Road intersects with Orange Avenue.
The bear disappeared into a wooded area, Leamon said.
