A chain-reaction crash involving five vehicles backed up traffic on Interstate 81 in Salem during morning rush hour Friday but caused no reported injuries.
Virginia State Police Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze was southbound near mile marker 138 in the left lane and failed to slow for traffic stopped in front of it. The Cruze rear-ended a 2010 Acura Integra, which then struck a guardrail and two other cars.
The fourth car, a 2007 Kia Spectra, then struck a 1997 Honda Accord, Carpentieri said.
The driver of the Cruze, 23-year-old Lindsay Dowdy of Salem, was charged with failure to maintain control of her vehicle.
Carpentieri said the incident was not "related or the result of" a state police trooper who had stopped in the roadway to remove debris just prior to the wreck.
The crash caused traffic delays of up to 5 miles, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
