A possible sinkhole has closed down a lane of Interstate 81 in Montgomery County.
Late Thursday afternoon, the Virginia Department of Transportation discovered what could be a sinkhole on the right shoulder of I-81 south near exit 118c in Christiansburg, according to a release from VDOT. The right lane near the exit is closed down for emergency repairs for about a mile.
Crews are evaluating the size and cause of the hole to repair it and reopen the road, according to the release. The lane closure will be in place until approximately 5 p.m., according to VDOT. The asphalt must cool before traffic can travel on the newly paved portion of the road.
VDOT's website warned drivers to expect delays due to maintenance activities in the area. For more traffic related information and to see if the traffic is backed up, visit www.511Virginia.org.
