Fishburn Park Elementary School students are celebrating Earth Day all week long with a series of activities that were scheduled to kick off Monday, according to a school system news release.
The week’s events were scheduled to begin with an opening ceremony Monday followed by an event Tuesday with hybrid cars and a GPS course. Animals from the Mill Mountain Zoo are also scheduled to visit the school, and students are holding a fundraiser for the zoo .
A Fitness Walk-A-Thon is scheduled for Thursday, and a parade on Friday will close out the week, according to the release.

Roanoke County Public Schools teacher Holly Ireland has been named a STAR Discovery Educator, according to a news release.
STAR Discovery Educators are active members of the Discovery Educator Network. The network connects educators who are passionate about the use of digital media and technology so they can share ideas and resources.
The release states Ireland is “a leader in transforming and enhancing learning in Roanoke County Public School classrooms.”
As a STAR Discovery Educator, Ireland will share research and teaching methods with educators within the district and across the state and world, the release states. She also will have access to free professional development tools provided by the network.
Ireland teaches at Herman L. Horn and Mount Pleasant elementary schools, a school system spokesman said.

Stonewall Jackson Middle School students were recognized Monday for their digital literacy, according to information from the school system.
Students at the school have participated in the “My Digital Life Program,” which teaches responsible Internet use with the goal of reducing cyber bullying. On Monday, Rep. Bob Goodlatte spoke with students about the importance of digital responsibility.

Westside Elementary School will hold a math carnival Thursday evening aimed at showing parents games they can use to help children with specific math skills.
Carnival booths will be set up at the school with simple games that can be played at home. The event will begin at 6 and end at 7:30 p.m.
