Southbound traffic had been detoured onto U.S. 11/460 due to an unstable slope near mile marker 124.8.

Southbound lanes of Interstate 81 are now open to traffic in the areas of Roanoke County and Montgomery County, where a detour had been established to correct an unstable slope.
A news release from VDOT said the safety issue was discovered Wednesday near mile marker 124.8. The contractor on the truck climbing lane project in that area of the road has paved additional travel lanes to keep traffic away from the unstable area, VDOT said.
A barrier wall has also been built to keep traffic away from the old southbound lanes.
The release said experts are still determining the best way to correct the slope. The unstable section, according to VDOT, is about 60 feet wide and 60 feet tall with a 25 foot deep crack.
Traffic had been routed to U.S. 11 at exit 132, but is now flowing on Interstate 81.
