A 16-year-old boy drowned in a pond in Floyd County on Monday afternoon, according to a police news release.
The release stated that the Floyd County Sheriff's Office received a call at 3:45 p.m. about a possible drowning in the 400 block of Agnes Lane in Willis.
Police and EMS crews arrived on scene at 3:54 p.m. but were unable to locate the teenager, whose name was not released. Dive teams from Christiansburg, Virginia Tech and Elliston responded, and a body was located about two hours later near the area where the boy was last seen.
Police said a friend tried to help the boy but could not reach him. The death appears to be accidental but is under investigation at this time, the release stated.
