I consider former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden a traitor to our country. I hope he is extradited back to America and punished to the fullest extent of the law.
That said: What’s the problem? Snowden said that he believes Americans have the right to know what is happening with our right to privacy. Does he really believe we are all so stupid that we do not know our right to privacy went out the window when 1. We signed up for OnStar? 2. We logged on to the Internet? 3. We signed up for Life Lock? 4. We logged on to Facebook, Linksys, Twitter and all the other social media sites and when we bought our first smart phone?
When our right to privacy used to be important, we lived in a different world. A world without fear of being gunned down at the local McDonalds or when we participate in a sporting event or send our child off to school. A world without the need for homeland security. We could fly around the world with the only threat being a possible detour to Cuba.
Again, what’s the problem? If you are not communicating with a terrorist, either domestic or foreign, if you are not involved in illegal weapons trafficking, if you are not dealing drugs or selling human beings, or planning a mass murder, or planning to overthrow the government, then why do you care if our protective agencies such as the Central Intelligence Agency, Federal Bureau of Investigation or Department of Homeland Security see your phone records and your Internet activities? Frankly, I’m feeling just a little more secure knowing they have this capability, and I will vote against any politician who wants to take away this protection.
I guess I feel as I do mostly because I am an American citizen who stays on the right side of the law. (I did get a parking ticket a few weeks ago that I paid under protest because I think I was unjustly ticketed since there was not a “no parking” sign visible, but that’s another story.) The point being, I really have nothing to hide, so bring on the scrutiny if it will stop one child from being murdered, one terrorist from completing a brutal act or help to stop the flow of illegal weapons and drugs from coming into our country.
