I would like to thank Ronald Roseveare for his March 6 op-ed, “Disincentivizing hybrids.” I, too, strongly oppose the proposed tax.
I immediately wrote to those he mentioned in his comments who also oppose the hybrid tax, Del. Kathy Byron and Sen. Steve Newman. Because I live in Roanoke, I copied Del. Onzlee Ware, Del. Chris Head and Sen. John Edwards.
I would like to add one more item to Roseveare’s comments. March 4 through March 8, our commonwealth proudly promoted Telework Week, and one of the prompts to telework was to leave your car in the garage because you are helping the environment.
State employees and those in Virginia’s business community were all encouraged to work from home whenever possible. So I guess if you leave your gas-guzzling SUV in the garage and telework, you are helping the environment. But if you own a hybrid, you will be penalized for not buying enough fuel during the year.
There is no way anyone can convince me that the alternative fuel tax on hybrids is just, smart, forward thinking, fair or sensible.
