Re: "Death and life in Maryland," March 20 Cal Thomas column:
In his critique of the abolishment of capital punishment in Maryland, Thomas equates abortion with the death penalty. Both, he asserts, take a life.
While there can be no argument in the case of the execution of a convicted murderer, Thomas is stating his personal belief that an aborted fetus is a human life. While I respect such an opinion, it nevertheless remains his personal belief.
Nor does a careful reading of the Bible support it. Genesis says Adam became a living being only when God breathed the breath of life into his nostrils. Exodus clearly places a lower value on a fetus than on a human life. Jeremiah states that God knew the prophet before he was formed in the womb.
We can all agree that abortion is bad and should be discouraged. Rather than criminalizing it, however, government should do everything possible to discourage it. Birth control should be widely available. Social services such as food stamps and Head Start as well, to support those indigent children who were not aborted.
If we are to be pro-life, society must support all children who are not aborted.
