Welcome to go where there’s gun control
I recently read a letter in this newspaper praising the way Australia controlled the ownership of guns in that country (“Look Down Under for a civilized gun policy,” April 15 Pick of the day).
I also read a commentary in this newspaper from a person who had vacationed in New Zealand explaining how that country controlled the ownership of guns (“Yes, the government should take your gun away,” April 20).
Both expressed how great they thought the governments of these two countries were doing at controlling guns.
If those folks think those countries are doing such a great job at gun control, maybe they should pack their stuff and go live there.
Maybe they could take columnist Dan Casey and his easily obtained concealed-carry permit with them.
Prius owners get a double-whammy
Whether the annual fee is $100 or $64, it’s still double taxation, since those of us driving a Prius or other alternate-fuel vehicle are going to pay the same sales tax increase as everybody else.
I would also like to point out that most alternate-fuel vehicles weigh less than their gas-hog brothers and sisters, so they do less damage to the road.
It wasn’t enough that Gov. Bob McDonnell created a windfall for the already rich oil companies, allowing them to fill the gap vacated by the gas tax, but he decided to punish us for being good stewards of the environment.
I hope that whatever office he runs for next, all you Prius owners will remember this.
You can be sure I will, and I’ll be reminding you.
