Fear of gun control overtakes reason
Should a person convicted for a violent felony have access to guns? Should a person threatening an ex-spouse (while ordered by a court to stay away) have access? Should the mentally ill who appear to be a danger to themselves or others? Should children or youth not properly trained in gun safety have access to guns?
If you believe any of these people should not have access to guns, you are for some form of gun control. Is what we presently have adequate? Obviously not. Is it simply a matter of enforcing laws we already have? No. The laws lack uniformity from state to state and have been limited and crippled by gun lobbies.
If you don’t believe in some form of gun control, then fear of future “government control” of guns overwhelms your sense of the immediate catastrophe occurring in our society.
If you believe your right to unlimited access to guns takes priority over everyone else’s right to safety, we would classify you as blindly and irresponsibly selfish.
Fear-mongering isn’t pretty when preachers, politicians or gun interests do it. The Bible warns us about making decisions based on fear and self-interest. It will destroy a person or a society.

Council seeks to serve — itself
I am appalled that most Roanoke City Council members would attempt to vote themselves a 28.5 percent pay raise when many other people in Roanoke feel lucky just to be able to keep their jobs in today’s economic environment (“Council gets closer to raises,” May 7 news story).
Council members knew what their positions paid when they agreed to accept them.
Now their seeming arrogance and sense of entitlement appears to paint them in the same light as our self-serving members of the U.S. Congress, who allow themselves automatic pay raises.
I suggest that if council members are not satisfied with their pay, they should discontinue their service at the end of their current terms and seek a different part-time position.
