‘Distinguished’ only by far-right positions
Ken Srpan (“Cuccinelli will fight for Virginians’ rights,” Sept. 24 letter) extols us to vote for Ken Cuccinelli, who has “raised a family and built a distinguished career in Virginia.”
I will agree that he has raised a family, although I and many others have done the same, so I’m not sure that lends any special qualification for the governorship.
I will also vouch for his distinguished career. He has distinguished himself by attacking climate science and wasting the state’s money. He is well-known for his anti-gay positions that the U.S. Supreme Court has essentially struck down. He strong-armed the state Board of Health into effectively closing abortion clinics and made headlines. He is recognized for opposing the Affordable Care Act and help for the medically uninsured.
So maybe “notorious” or “infamous” would be a better adjective for this far-right fringe candidate. He is in no way what we “really need.”
Terry McAuliffe will govern in the functional, moderate, inclusive manner that we had with Govs. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine.

Medicaid expansion wouldn’t be free
Terry McAuliffe has said that he is adamant about Medicaid expansion. The federal government says it is free for the first three years. First, can we stop right there. Why are taxpayer-funded projects always considered “free”?
We pay 15 cents of every dollar earned in every paycheck into Social Security and Medicare, which is an insane amount of money — but Social Security is broke, and Medicare payments are being slashed. The Lee Regional Medical Center, the only hospital in Lee County, cited Obamacare cuts in Medicare reimbursements as one of the primary reasons for closing.
Obamacare isn’t even fully implemented, and it is wreaking havoc. Why would a responsible government agree to the Medicaid pig-in-a-poke? Do we have to agree to it and then find out what is in it, just like Obamacare? Thank you, Ken Cuccinelli, for looking out for Virginia.
