The public will love health care reform
Recently, Sen. Ted Cruz said Obamacare would become so popular people would make it a permanent part of the healthcare system. “If we do not pursue this strategy [defunding],” he said, “we are saying we surrender. Obamacare will be a permanent feature of the American economy.” If the “subsidies kick in,” the prospects for full repeal of Obamacare diminish dramatically, Cruz said. Well, I say that Sen. Cruz is correct. People like Social Security. People like Medicare. I’m sure they’ll like the Affordable Care Act. Conservatives attacked both Social Security and Medicare with rhetoric similar to that used against the ACA. But the public discovered the deceit when we didn’t become a socialist nation.
Neither unemployment compensation nor food stamps caused the U.S. to become a communist state. Yet Republicans in the House of Representatives are threatening to shut down the government if the Senate and President Obama don’t eliminate Obamacare. Republicans say the U.S. doesn’t negotiate with terrorists. President Obama should follow that advice when dealing with Republicans who would take down the economy of this great country.
All must help to avert tragedies
Re: “Today, I cry for you, America” (Sept. 22 commentary by Heidi Miller, a survivor of the Virginia Tech 2007 shooting):
Yes, I have felt this same emotion many times, and I am not a physical survivor of the tragedy at Virginia Tech. But, I am an emotional survivor of the mass shootings in our country. Miller said, “Our greatest threats are not just outside our borders. Look in the mirror, America.” “Let us make changes and not excuses. The theoretical is gone. Guns kill. People kill.” If you have not read her commentary, please take time to do so because her plea for common sense makes sense.
It is incumbent upon all of us to help others — to intervene to prevent more violence. Aaron Alexis, the shooter at the Navy Yard, was almost stopped in his tracks. We cannot be indifferent or complacent.
If someone you know is threatening to hurt others, please act. Please follow through with calls and action to ensure that the person does not hurt himself or others. Too often we believe it is not our responsibility.
Wake up. It is our responsibility. Everyone is our neighbor. Those who need help are our responsibility, and to prevent violence is our responsibility.
‘Kerr Lake’ bugs real Virginians
I am a cranky old man; therefore, I would like to point out a regional error in Matt Chittum’s otherwise fine article “Sale stalls as no one bids for Maridor B&B in Roanoke” (Sept. 21).
The reporter writes that owners Brette and Henry Ciavarella plan to retire to a farm east of South Boston on Kerr Lake. The official name of this lake in Virginia is Buggs Island Lake.
Only a North Carolinian or American from any other part of the nation would call it Kerr Lake.
