It dismays me to hear people say that we have much more important issues to decide than those concerning LGBT equality. I ask simply, what other issues could be more important than civil rights that directly affect the lives of some 10 million to 30 million people in America?
What other issues are more important than those that address outright discrimination against a minority population that has been oppressed throughout history?
If it were you who was denied a job or fired from your job, denied a civil marriage license or the adoption of a child, or denied survivor benefits because of whom you loved, would you be more apt to feel this was an important issue to resolve, to make right in America?
Surely, when but one American is denied his or her civil rights, we all suffer, and we suffer as a nation as well.
