This week was the 10th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. I'll never forget where I was on the day the world was introduced to our pre-emptive "shock and awe" attack. The invasion followed, and an occupation that lasted more than eight years. I knew at the time that it was a disaster in the making, but I do not take much satisfaction in that prescience.
Now what do we have? Iraq is a failed state; its leaders are corrupt; there is little or no security in most places; infrastructure is still wrecked; bombings, detentions, protests continue while hundreds of thousands have become refugees and a similar number have lost their lives.
The Iraqi insurgency continues and caused thousands of fatalities in 2012. And, of course, we still have to pay for the mess that Messrs. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld created.
How sad that warmongers like them are never held accountable for their actions, and instead have a cushy pension for the rest of their lives. I hope at least that their consciences bother them.
