Re: "Get ahead of the next safety threat," April 15 letter:
Joe Painter sarcastically addresses Americans' tendency to overreact to safety threats to children by saying we need to ban box cutters. This, because recently a young man managed to injure many people with a sharp weapon at Lone Star State Community College.
I hope it was not lost on Painter that, while the assailant did harm many people, not one of them died. It turns out it is not as easy to take a whole slew of lives with a knife of any sort as it is with a semi-automatic gun or guns. Who would have thought?
Further, it turns out that bystanders were fairly rapidly able to tackle the man and restrain him. I wonder why. Maybe it is because it is easier to dodge around a knife than dodge a speeding bullet.
I understand Painter's desire to make gun control sound ludicrous. However, that is not possible. Reasonable people know that gun control measures such as universal background checks and bans on semi-automatic weapons, along with improved mental health laws, will help keep everyone safer, including children.
I only wish officials in Washington would be reasonable.
