Bill Gregory (“Evidence ICLEI is taking over as clear as RCCLEAR,” May 13 commentary) asks, “Do you believe man-made CO2 emissions are a major contributor to global warming?” He goes on to claim that this is being presented as fact by global-warming “alarmists.”
Use of this word rather than one that recognizes their professional status suggests that they are unqualified. In fact, those persons warning of global warming are not wacky alarmists. These concerns are shared by the vast majority of more than 2,000 competent climate scientists with decades of specialist education and research data to support their position.
They are trying to inform the world of serious long-term climate risks and the need for action before it is too late.
The alarmists in this controversy are those who lack academic credentials in climate science but angrily deny without evidence the validity of scientific studies, and who cite an unsubstantiated claim that this is part of a nefarious plot by the United Nations to take away our freedoms.
Let’s approach this issue with reason and science rather than ideological rants, Big Oil disinformation and fear of hidden agendas.
