The proposed pay increase for Roanoke City Council wasted a lot of time when the mayor and council decided not to vote for the very proposal that they advocated. Do they deserve a raise? Of course they do.
Why not reduce the size of the council to five members based on equal, pie-shaped districts, with all having an interest in the center city? Other local governments function with five commissioners.
And while we are on a transformational change, why not go to a strong mayor-executive manager form of government? We already have the candidate in City Manager Chris Morrill.
Of course, council members could work on the waste that exists in five local governments. They could work on merging the local governments and get rid of all the waste. Perhaps we need only five representatives for the entire region.
Perhaps then we could afford an infrastructure that eliminates power outages. Perhaps we could base council pay on an increase in personal income for residents or a decrease in power outages. Now that’s a novel concept.
