My lovely wife and I have been married for 38 years. If a same-sex couple decides to marry and live their lives within the laws of society, how does that degrade my marriage or any marriage? How can their choice change my values or how I live my life?
Tom Phelps (“Gay marriage reflects moral corruption,” Sept. 19 letter) has the argument — if there must be one — backwards. It is not required that those who support gay marriage show that it is good. The requirement is that those opposed to gay marriage show that it is bad and corrupts the general society.
Show me that gay marriage increases crime, produces more murders or pedophiles, that it causes property values to go down, or lowers the level of education in our schools.
Where is the proof that it has any real negative effects on society? The data is not there.
What is there are people who are having their personal beliefs threatened and working to actively deny law-abiding citizens their rights and privileges guaranteed by the Constitution.
