Salem’s Dale Moore, who entered the day tied for second, slipped to a 6-over-par 78 in the second round of stroke-play qualifying but still managed to claim the next-to-last spot among the eight players advancing to match play at the 19th VSGA Super Senior Amateur Championship at The Golf Club at Landowne’s Robert Trent Jones Course.
Alexandria’s Bill Engel, 66, shot 70 to easily claim medalist honors in the 65-and-over class by seven shots at 2-under 141.
Roanokers Bill Proffitt (155) and Marvin Thews (158), and Galax’s Roger Carpenter (163) failed to make match play.
Spurred by a division-best 70 on Wednesday, Roanoke’s Marvin Taylor finished with a qualifying total of 146 to claim the fourth seed in the 70-74 age group. Arlington’s Peter Jacobi was the division medalist at 140.
In the 75-and-over division, Roanoke’s Bill Shrader (160), Ned Baber (162) and Gib Wingfield (162) failed to make the low four advancing to match play. Williamsburg’s Harry Cain shot 72 to claim medalist honors at 148.
