LYNCHBURG -- Garin Cecchini had a solo home run, double and two RBIs as the Red Sox pounded Hillcats’ starting pitcher Mark Pope for seven runs in two-plus innings of work en route to an 8-1 win at City Stadium on Thursday.
Sox starter Kyle Stroup worked 5 1⁄3 innings allowing one earned run and six hits while striking out six.
Former Virginia Tech pitcher Matt Price, added to the roster to replace suspended pitcher Mickey Pena, tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Pena, Salem's opening-day starter, has been suspended 50 games for a second violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, MLB announced late Wednesday.
Price was a 2010 draftee who started the season in extended spring training. He was suspended 50 games last season for a second positive test for a drug of abuse, and had not pitched in a game since 2011.
