WILMINGTON, Del. — After scoring seven runs in the first two innings the night before, the Salem Red Sox and starter Kyle Stroup (4-5) were rudely greeted by a Wilmington Blue Rocks team that scored eight runs in the first two innings and then held off a late Sox rally to take an 11-7 victory at Frawley Stadium.
Lane Adams opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the first inning followed by six more runs on six hits in the second to chase Stroup and stake the Blue Rocks to an 8-0 lead.
The Sox made things interesting in the seventh, trailing 8-1, five consecutive hitters reached against reliever Cory Hall, including a two-run double by Blake Swihart.
By the end of the innings the Sox trailed 8-7.
However, the Blue Rocks scored three runs in the last two innings off Sox reliever Robby Scott to salt away the victory.
ON DECK: The Sox will send William Cuevas (3-6, 6.07) out for the rubber game of the three-game series against Blue Rocks’ right-hander Kyle Zimmer, who got his first professional win against the Sox back on June 12th. First pitch is at 1:35 p.m.
