WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston Salem Dash scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning Monday to break open a 3-2 game and comfortably win 8-2 over the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Park.
The Sox raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third as Stefan Welch singled home Henry Ramos and Deven Marrero.
However, the Dash countered with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by solo home runs from David Herbek and Joey DeMichele.
After Welch’s two-run single, the Sox could only manage four singles for the rest of the game as starter Chris Bassitt (7-2) settled in and three relievers finished the job.
In the eighth, a single and two fielding errors loaded the bases which were then cleared by a sacrifice fly, two RBI singles and a two-run home run by Grant Buckner.
Mike Augliera (5-5) took the loss for Salem, surrendering three runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
Keury De La Cruz saw his 19-game hitting streak snapped.
ON DECK: Game two of this four-game series will take place at 7:00 p.m. at BB&T Park.
