Former Virginia Tech men’s basketball guard Robert Brown told the Birmingham News on Tuesday that he plans to transfer to Conference USA member UAB.
Brown, a Clermont, Fla., native who struggled offensively as a sophomore this year, announced in March that he would leave the Hokies.
Two of UAB’s assistant coaches were on the Hokies staff when Brown was a freshman — former Tech assistant Rob Ehsan and former Tech director of basketball operations Jeff Wulbrun .
“I’m real [close] to Coach Ehsan and Coach Wulbrun,” Brown said, according to the newspaper’s website. “It’s significantly closer to home from where I was.”
Brown said he also considered East Tennessee State.
Generals, Maroons cited
W&L’s Brooke O’Brien , who steered the Generals to their fourth straight ODAC title, has been named the ODAC coach of the year for the third time.
The All-ODAC first team included Roanoke’s Allison Bonanno and Darragh Evarts and W&L’s Leanne Stone .
The second team included Roanoke’s Kathleen Wager (Rockbridge County), Jamie Golden and Stephanie Vogel and W&L’s Katie Hagen, Meade Brewster and Olive Waxter. The third team included Roanoke’s Rosie Knisley and Katie Gehrdes .
Penn Tech 2, SVU 1
BUTLER, Pa. — Pennsylvania College of Technology (23-16) beat the Knights in a consolation game in the USCAA Small College World Series.
Mitch Stevenson had an RBI single for the Knights, who finished the season with an 18-16 record. SVU went 0-2 in the World Series.
Down 2-1, SVU loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. But Tyler Clark hit into a double play.
Blacksburg graduate Megan Rhodes of the Radford women’s soccer team was one of six Big South senior athletes in a variety of sports who received the league’s George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence.
Rhodes, who has a double major in elementary education and Spanish, will graduate Saturday with a 4.0 GPA. She will be a graduate student at Vanderbilt.
