A new hotel development is in the works in Hollins.

Crews began construction on the Tru by Hilton June 6 on an empty lot next to Gander Mountain, according to developer Kirtesh Patel. The midscale brand is one of Hilton's newest and is designed to be modern, digital-friendly and "value-conscious," according to its website. It will be the first of its kind in the Roanoke Valley.

The four-story hotel will have 82 rooms. A news release from Roanoke County said it's an $8 million investment that will create more than 30 new jobs. The hotel is expected to open next summer.

In the news release, board of supervisors Chairman Joe McNamara said the investment coincides with the county's Plantation Road Transportation Enhancement Project, which began in 2009, as an economic development strategy for the Hollins area. The hotel, he said, shows that area is expanding and tourism is growing.
