Carilion names new chief medical officer

After conducting a national search, Carilion Clinc has selected an internal candidate to be its next chief medical officer.

Dr. Patrice Weiss, currently head of Carilion’s obstetrics and gynecology department, was recently named to one of the top leadership positions at the Roanoke-based health care system. She will begin her new job Saturday.

As chief medical officer, Weiss will oversee more than 650 physicians and 200 physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are part of a network of hospitals and outpatient centers that treat nearly 1 million people in Southwest Virginia.

“I am not surprised that our national search for the best candidate led us to Patrice,” Carilion President and CEO Nancy Agee said in an announcement Monday. “Over the past seven years at Carilion she has distinguished herself as an inspirational leader, innovative thinker and tireless advocate for quality and safety in health care.”

Weiss will continue to serve as head of the OB/GYN department until her successor can be hired. She replaces Dr. Wayne Gandee, who retired as Carilion’s chief medical officer in April after a 43-year career in health care.
