Baby showers celebrate new parents and outfit them with gifts that will help with their new baby. Often hosted by those closest to the parents a few months before the due date, here are five things to know about throwing a baby shower. Scroll further for ideas for four fun baby shower products.

Cost

Budgeting for party expenses is the first step in planning a baby shower. You’ll need to get an idea of how many people you are inviting and what you want to spend on the venue, invitations, food and decor.

At a minimum, you’ll likely be spending several hundred dollars. Cost-cutting measures can include sharing hosting duties with several friends or family members, holding the baby shower at your home or at a local park, making the food yourself, emailing invitations or creating your own decorations.

Food and venue

Food choices can depend on the location of the baby shower, but expect to serve some appetizers or a light spread and some dessert items.

If you’re hosting the party somewhere like a park, consider how you’ll pack, transport and store the food there.

Make sure there is seating available for all guests. Hosting at home can be very cost-efficient but tight on space. A restaurant or hotel banquet room can accommodate more people and provide catered food, but at a higher cost.

Invitations‌ and decor

After you’ve determined a date, time, and venue with the parents-to-be, it’s time to order invitations. There are plenty of designs to choose from, no matter if the shower decor theme is gender-specific or neutral.

Send the invitations one to two months before the baby shower.

For decorations, festive gender neutral options include ever-popular diaper cakes, balloon arches or greenery. Even if the baby shower theme is gender-specific, pick one color and start from there for easy decorating.

Presents‌

Create a designated area for guests to drop off their presents when they arrive. The parents-to-be traditionally open the gifts in front of the guests at a baby shower. Be prepared to write down which guest gave what gift, so the new parents can write thank-you notes.

Games‌

Baby shower games are a great way to get everyone in a party mood.

Search the internet for games the guests will enjoy, and you can even find instructions for DIY games as well, such as variations on bingo and the newlywed game.

Be sure to supply prizes for game winners, too. Goodie bags or mini succulents can be great prizes or overall party favors to thank guests for coming.

A well-stocked diaper bag will ensure you and your little one are ready for anything. Here are recommendations for 13 essential items to pack.
