Bowers backs Clinton campaign

Bowers backs Clinton campaign

Roanoke Mayor David Bowers is joining up with Hillary Clinton's Virginia Leadership Council in the 2016 race for president, according to Clinton's camp.

Bowers signed onto the committee Monday. He appears to be the only Western Virginia representative on a list headlined by longtime Clinton confidante Gov. Terry McAuliffe and the state's Democratic congressional delegation.

"I think Hillary, despite some most recent complications with her campaign, will be the Democratic nominee, will be elected and will be a great president," he said in a brief interview Wednesday.

Clinton has been stuck in what some commentators describe as a "negative feedback loop" that is depressing her poll numbers, though she remains the leading Democratic contender for president.

Bowers, a Democrat and veteran of city politics, has served several non-consecutive terms in local office. Most recently, he's been city mayor since 2008.
