Christiansburg man arrested after death of 2-year-old boy

A Christiansburg man has been charged with child abuse after the death of a 2-year-old boy Sunday.

McKenzie Kyle Hellman, 25, was arrested after events that began with a Friday night call that a child had fallen at a residence in the 400 block of Zinc Lane and was unresponsive, a town news release said. Hellman is being held at the Montgomery County Jail.

Officers found a boy lying on the floor. Police and paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and detected a heartbeat, and the child was taken to LewisGale Hospital Montgomery. Later he was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

He died Sunday evening without regaining consciousness, the news release said.

The boy’s name has not been released.

Hellman was not related to the boy but was watching him at the time that the fall was reported, the news release said.

Police said the boy’s injuries did not appear consistent with a fall, the news release said.
