BLACKSBURG — Call it puppy love.
This Valentine’s Day, Virginia Tech’s most recognizable pooch popped the question.
Growley II (who also goes by the call sign “Tank”) asked his new girlfriend Bracey to be his doggy date to Tech’s Corps of Cadets Military Ball on Saturday.
Growley is an ambassador for the corps who arrived on campus in fall 2016 from Ciao Bella Retrievers of Troutville, where he was part of service dog training.
He makes public appearances at football games, local hospitals and other events throughout the school year.
Growley and Bracey, who is owned by sophomore marketing management major Mallory Walsh, have gotten to know each other over the last few months.
Sporting a collar-attached bow tie during their walk through the Drillfield on Wednesday afternoon, Growley presented her with a single red rose dangling from his mouth and a card that read: “Will you play fetch at the military ball with me?”
Tail wagging, Bracey leaped to her hind legs in agreement. It was a date.
Growley gave his long-coated sweetie a new flowery scarf and doggy bag full of treats and flirty chew toys.
Appropriately, a short game of playful tug-of-war preceded the gift-giving.
The new couple posed for some Instagram photos — Tank has about 5,000 followers and Bracey has 12,000 of her own — before playing a game of fetch and snacking on Valentine’s Day-themed treats.
And Growley was polite during their game, allowing Bracey to have turns bringing the ball back to the human that threw it.
Perhaps it’s that kind of chivalry that has landed Growley a date with his canine crush.
It just goes to show, everyone wants to go to the dance with a good boy.
