Christiansburg Mayor Mike Barber re-elected; three earn council seats

CHRISTIANSBURG — Mayor Mike Barber won another term as Christiansburg's mayor Tuesday in a race against two of his council colleagues.

He will preside over a reconfigured Town Council with newcomers Tanya Hockett, Timothy Wilson and Anthony Woodyard.

Returns showed Barber, Christiansburg’s mayor since 2014, fending off challenges from Councilwoman Johana Hicks and Vice Mayor Sam Bishop with 53 percent of the vote.

“I'm pleased with where I stand at this point," Barber said. "Assuming I win, I look forward to working with the new council."

Hicks finished second place at deadline with about 32% of the vote, and Bishop had 15%.

The race was a contentious one, with Hicks saying Barber, who has been on council for more than two decades, had been in office for too long and was part of a "good ole boys club." Barber had retorted that Hicks, who joined council in 2019 and was the top vote-getter in that race, was now a part of the establishment herself.

The remaining council races were split between a field of six candidates. With incumbents Steve Huppert, Brad Stipes and Marissa Sachs deciding not to seek re-election, half of council’s non-mayoral seats were up for grabs.

Hockett was the top council vote-getter with about 25% of the vote. She works for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management and helps localities develop emergency exercises, and also serves on a public health task force that directs regional response to the pandemic.

Wilson had about 18% and Woodyard 16%.

Of the council seats that were not on Tuesday's ballot, Bishop and Hicks will continue to hold two, while the third is that of Councilman Henry Showalter.
