A Vinton man was pronounced dead Monday night after police found his vehicle crashed into a utility pole, according to a Vinton Police Department news release.

Police investigated the crash after patrolling officers noticed street lights go out near Washington Avenue and Lynnhaven Circle about 10:30 p.m. They found Calvin Wayne Carter, 52, unresponsive and without a pulse in a Chevrolet van, which had crashed into a utility pole in front of the Vinton Masonic Lodge near Washington Avenue and Preston Road.

Carter was sent to an unspecified hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of the crash has not been determined.
